My first week in Rome

I won’t always post what we did every day, but I really want to fill you guys in on my first week in Rome.

Tues, Jan. 2: We arrived at the Rome Center in the evening to drop off our big luggage, checked into our hotel (after searching for it for awhile), went to dinner at a pizzeria across the street, which was really fun and tasty. Then the six of us girls got some much needed sleep.

Wed, Jan. 3: Got up early so we could claim our beds at our apartments, checked in at Rome Center to get our keys, our orientation was postponed until the next day, so we used the time to relax and unpack. At 7 pm all of the students were invited to a potluck at Lisa's apartment. Very yummy!

Thur, Jan. 4:
Tour around Campo de Fiori and other surrounding areas. I gave my short presentation (I was the very first person to do a presentation) on the history of the Campo de Fiori. At 2:30 pm we had our Rome Center orientation, which was great cause they gave us a book filled of places to go for anything our hearts could desires. Later that night, some of us went out to dinner and had a lot of fun. By this time I was definitely craving some protein, so I ordered meatballs, but it seems as though the Italians really aren’t big on foods other than the carbs. I got the cutest little meat “discs.” Very tasty, but I am definitely on the hunt for some good Italian meat.

Fri,Jan. 5:
Today our Art History class went to Tarquinia, a Tuscan town that was the home of the Etruscans. The Etruscans were here in Italy before the Romans. One fact I found randomly amusing is that they often plundered Greek ships and so a lot of the artifacts found from the Etruscans were actually Greek. We got to tour the tombs of where they were buried and discuss the various art painted on the walls on the tombs. These tell us a lot of what was important to the Etruscans and how they viewed the afterlife. After wandering around the beautiful countryside where the tombs are located, our class went to a restaurant and had a delicious Tuscan lunch. Then, we explored the museum containing lots of Etruscan artifacts.

Sat, Jan. 6: Toured some of "Ancient Rome," and this was by far my favorite day so far. We went to Capitoline Hill, the birthplace of Rome, where we heard the mythical story of Rome’s creation. After that, Lisa guided us through the Roman Forum. I feel like I can now truly appreciate how special theses ruins are having heard about their history of construction, function, and resurrection on the actually site. There was something so breathtaking about seeing these ruined buildings as the morning sun was rising above our heads and just the smallest bit of morning mist was still clearing. I felt like I was in a 18th century Romantic painting of the picturesque. After our class tour was done, a couple of us girls had lunch in the Campo, worked on some homework, and then I went to bed exceptionally early (still trying to fight that jet lag).

Sun, Jan 7: Today was a day of rest and homework. I slept in just as one should on a quiet, Roman Sunday. Did a lot of homework, then had dinner at a different restaurant in the Campo de Fiori. It’s really fun to experiment with the vast options just in our own backyard. But, honestly you can’t really get bad food. Italians seriously know how to do food.

I'm in Roma!

Ciao tutti!

I am finally in Roma and it's just as wonderful as I remember it. It's warm (compared to Seattle) and sunny. I can't wait to tell of my adventures, but for now just know that I arrived safely.
